Industrial Intelligent Gateway Solution for Collecting Data from Siemens PLCs in a Smart Factory

Published: 2026-11-05 11:36:26

Scenario Description:

On the automated production line of a smart factory, Siemens S7-1200 PLCs are used to control production equipment, and Siemens S7-400 is used to achieve intelligent control of the workshop environment; meanwhile, a wastewater treatment system is deployed and controlled by S7-200 SMART. In order to achieve real-time monitoring, data analysis, and remote management of production, environment, and wastewater treatment, the factory needs to collect data from the PLCs and upload it to the factory's Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) platform.

Data Acquisition Process:

1.Device Connection
PLC models: Siemens S7-1200, S7-400, S7-200 SMART.
Gateway model: Industrial intelligent gateway WG583 (supports serial/Ethernet communication).
Connection method: Connect the industrial intelligent gateway to the Siemens PLCs through serial ports/network ports, and ensure that both are in the same network segment.

2.Data Acquisition and Processing
Real-time acquisition: The gateway reads data from the PLCs at the configured acquisition frequency (such as once per second) according to the configured protocol and addresses, such as equipment operating status, production counts, temperature, pressure, and other key parameters.
Edge computing: The gateway performs preliminary processing on the collected data, for example, calculating averages, maximum/minimum values, or generating alarm information according to preset rules.

3.Data Transmission
Communication protocol: The gateway uploads the processed data to the factory's IIoT platform through the MQTT protocol.
Data encryption: During transmission, data is encrypted through TLS/SSL to ensure data security.
Breakpoint resume: If the network is interrupted, the gateway will temporarily store the data in local storage and automatically retransmit it after the network is restored.

4.Data Monitoring and Analysis
IIoT platform: The factory's IIoT platform receives the data uploaded by the gateway and performs visual display, such as real-time curve charts, dashboards, equipment status indicators, etc.
Data analysis: The platform analyzes historical data, generates production reports, and optimizes production processes.
Remote control: Through the IIoT platform, operators can remotely view equipment status and perform simple control operations on the PLCs (such as starting/stopping equipment).
Remote maintenance: Through the device maintenance fast line, engineers can remotely access PLC programs to implement remote programming and debugging and remote program
upload/download operations.

Scenario Effects:

Through the industrial intelligent gateway to realize data acquisition and upload from Siemens PLCs, the factory can monitor the production process in real time and promptly discover equipment failures and production abnormalities. At the same time, production processes are optimized based on data analysis, improving production efficiency and product quality. In addition, remote monitoring and maintenance functions reduce the workload of on-site maintenance personnel and improve management efficiency.
