Remote Monitoring System for Sluice Gates in Small and Medium-Sized Hydropower Stations Based on PLC Control

Published: 2026-08-19 14:40:31
With the growing adoption of IoT systems in the digital management of hydropower stations, new demands have emerged for greater efficiency in sluice gate monitoring and operation. Real-time water level monitoring and timely gate opening are of critical importance. In the past, on-site personnel were required to manually check water levels, record the data, and then operate the gate switches—a process that was not only cumbersome but also inefficient. By contrast, a PLC-controlled gate system can automatically open and close gates as soon as water level information is detected, enabling automated and intelligent operations.

By connecting the on-site PLC to a WideIOT data acquisition gateway, the system can collect data such as water level, gate displacement, and switch status, and transmit it via 5G, 4G, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or other communication methods to either a local host computer or a cloud platform. This allows operators to monitor data changes and equipment status in real time at any time, and to receive fault alarms for timely management and control—ensuring safe and stable gate operation while also improving the economic efficiency of hydropower generation.

System Functions

Data Acquisition and Monitoring
Through sensors such as flow meters, water level gauges, and opening indicators, the system collects data on flow rate, water level, gate displacement, and switch status, centralizing them for unified monitoring and management, thereby streamlining operational workflows.

Abnormal Data Alarms
By setting upper and lower alarm thresholds, the system can automatically issue alerts when abnormal data is detected. Notifications are sent via WeChat, SMS, email, or other channels, facilitating timely intervention and control.

Remote Equipment Maintenance
Through a dedicated remote maintenance tunnel, engineers can perform remote PLC programming, debugging, and program uploading/downloading for off-site equipment—reducing the need for business travel and significantly cutting maintenance costs.

Data Reporting and Analysis
Users can query both real-time and historical data at any time. Based on data reports and trend charts, they can identify patterns and operational insights, enabling informed assessment and decision-making regarding the hydropower station's operating status.
