IoT Solution for Remote Monitoring of Road Pavers

Published: 2026-08-19 14:43:08
Road pavers are construction machines primarily used for laying various materials on highways and other road surfaces. During paving operations, processes such as material loading/unloading and road compaction cannot be monitored in real time using traditional methods. This lack of visibility can compromise road service life and driving safety, potentially wasting significant construction investment. However, with the support of digital and intelligent technologies, paving equipment can now achieve real-time digital monitoring, enabling users to quickly manage and control operations and ensure safe and stable paving performance.

Based on IoT technology, the paving and compaction data acquisition system uses WideIOT industrial IoT gateways to collect data from the paver's PLC. The system transmits real-time equipment operating conditions to a remote monitoring center—which can be WideIOT Cloud, a self-developed enterprise cloud, or third-party clouds such as Alibaba, Baidu, or Huawei. Operators can view data changes and receive fault alarm notifications, facilitating timely control and response. Additionally, the system allows for flexible allocation of idle equipment and enables unified management and scheduling of paving machines deployed across different regions nationwide.

By deploying WideIOT industrial IoT gateways directly on paving equipment, the gateways travel with the machines to construction sites anywhere in the country. Managers simply need to log in to the cloud platform via mobile phones or computers to view equipment location, operating status, fault information, maintenance records, and OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) analytics at any time—establishing a full lifecycle digital management system for the equipment.

System Functions

Remote Positioning: With built-in GPS functionality, the gateway enables real-time tracking of construction machinery across the country. Managers can instantly locate equipment, view comprehensive equipment information, and perform centralized management and control.

Remote Monitoring: By collecting and transmitting data to the cloud, the system provides real-time access to equipment operating parameters such as temperature, humidity, pressure, liquid level, and energy consumption. Data can be viewed simultaneously on both mobile and computer terminals.

Intelligent Alarming: In the event of equipment faults, disconnection, power outages, or other abnormal conditions, instant notifications are sent to the relevant stakeholders (manufacturers, dealers, or equipment owners) for rapid management and intervention—helping prevent major economic losses and safety incidents.

Remote Maintenance: Through a VPN-encrypted network, engineers can perform remote PLC programming, debugging, and program uploading/downloading for construction machinery. This significantly reduces travel costs and time while improving maintenance efficiency.

Reliability and Robustness: Designed with industrial-grade components and an IP30 protection rating, the gateway is well-suited for the complex and harsh environments typical of construction sites. Moreover, multi-network backup ensures stable and reliable data transmission.
