MQTT-Based IoT Temperature Monitoring System Using Publish/Subscribe Model

Published: 2026-08-08 11:18:20
MQTT is a lightweight messaging protocol primarily used for communication between IoT devices and applications. It is based on the publish/subscribe model and offers advantages such as flexibility, security, ease of use, and scalability.

Using an IoT temperature monitoring system as an example, we can illustrate how MQTT's publish/subscribe model works. In such a system, there are multiple temperature sensors deployed on-site, along with a temperature monitoring platform. Each sensor collects real-time temperature data and publishes it to a designated topic, while the monitoring platform subscribes to multiple topics to receive and process the data in real time. The process is implemented through the following steps:
Temperature sensors connect to the MQTT gateway, which collects the temperature data and publishes it to specified topics.

The temperature monitoring platform connects to the MQTT gateway (via 5G/4G/Wi-Fi/Ethernet, etc.) and subscribes to the relevant temperature topics.

When a temperature sensor publishes new data to a topic, the MQTT gateway forwards that message to all platforms that have subscribed to that topic.

Upon receiving the new temperature data, the monitoring platform can process and store the information—for example, by calculating average temperatures, generating reports, and so on.

In addition, MQTT also supports point-to-multipoint communication, which is useful for distributed processing and data storage in IoT applications. In such scenarios, a single MQTT gateway can connect to multiple temperature monitoring platforms simultaneously. Messages are transmitted via the MQTT protocol and can be displayed and accessed across multiple centers, allowing users to conveniently view real-time temperatures and perform timely management and control from anywhere.
