Solution for Siemens CNC Machines Reporting to MES System via OPC UA

Published: 2026-05-23 11:31:48

In a precision metal processing plant, there are dozens of CNC machines from different brands, such as Fanuc and Mitsubishi. The main challenge faced by management is the "management black box": the communication protocols of different machine brands are incompatible with each other. As a result, machine status (running, idle, faulty) cannot be monitored in real time, production progress relies on manual forms with significant delays, and fault alarms cannot be pushed automatically, leading to slow maintenance responses. What management urgently needs is a solution that breaks down protocol barriers and enables real-time machine data to be integrated into the MES system.

To address this, WideIOT deploys CNC smart gateways. These gateways connect directly to the machine's CNC system without requiring any modifications, and collect core data such as spindle load, part count, alarm codes, and tool life. The gateway then encapsulates this data into the standard OPC UA protocol and reports it to the MES system via 5G/4G/WiFi/Ethernet networks. This enables two-way data communication between the machines and the MES system, supporting remote machine monitoring, fault alerts, data statistics, and management analysis.

Functions Implemented

Real-time Monitoring of All Equipment

Management can view the current process, spindle load, and fault codes of all machines simultaneously on a central control dashboard. They can also quickly monitor environmental changes in each workshop, such as temperature, humidity, dust concentration, and water leakage.

Smart Alerts and Fault Traceability

When abnormal data exceeding thresholds is detected, the system automatically sends alerts via SMS, email, WeChat, and shop floor displays. It also records the affected equipment, timestamp, and values, providing a complete fault chain for audit and traceability purposes.

Energy Efficiency and OEE Analysis

By calculating the start/stop times, idle energy consumption, and yield rate of each machine, the system automatically generates shift-level Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE) reports and carbon emissions per unit of production. This helps the factory eliminate production bottlenecks and improve equipment utilization and production efficiency.
