Solution for IEC61850 to Modbus Data Collection from Power Protection Devices

Published: 2026-05-19 11:02:44

A substation is equipped with multiple power comprehensive protection devices that communicate via the IEC61850 protocol. To meet the requirements of smart grid construction, the utility company needs to integrate data from all these devices into a Modbusbased platform at the power dispatch center for remote monitoring and centralized management. However, IEC61850 devices cannot communicate directly with a Modbus platform, and replacing them with Modbus devices is impractical. Therefore, an efficient and reliable protocol conversion solution is urgently needed.

To address this, WideIOT deploys a protocol conversion gateway inside the substation's communication cabinet. The gateway connects to the power protection devices via the IEC61850 protocol, collects realtime data such as voltage, current, power, and switch status, and then reformats the data into Modbus before reporting it to the power dispatch center platform. This enables remote monitoring and precise management of all devices across the substation, significantly improving operational efficiency and management standards.

Key Features

The gateway is equipped with multiple communication interfaces and can aggregate data from all IEC61850 devices in the substation to the power dispatch center platform. It provides centralized visualization of voltage, current, power, switch status, and protection action signals across the substation, eliminating data silos.

The gateway supports twoway data communication, allowing the platform to send remote control commands to IEC61850 devices (such as switch opening/closing and protection setting adjustments). This improves responsiveness and management capabilities, enabling full remote control of the substation without the need to replace existing devices.

Realtime monitoring of current, voltage, and protection device action signals on each circuit. When a fault signal occurs, the system automatically pushes an alert with detailed fault information, allowing managers to quickly locate the issue, diagnose the cause, and take corrective action, thereby enhancing emergency response capabilities.

The platform can generate substationwide electrical operation reports, protection action event logs, and circuit breaker open/close statistics. It supports historical data queries and trend analysis, providing data support for equipment condition assessment and preventive maintenance, while reducing the workload of manual inspections.
