Solution for Modbus to MQTT Data Collection from Temperature Controllers

Published: 2026-05-19 10:57:23

A manufacturer of high-precision electronic components operates an SMT workshop that requires strict control over cleanliness, temperature, and humidity to ensure product quality. However, due to the dense layout of equipment, reading the various temperature controllers manually is highly inconvenient. This makes it difficult to adjust environmental conditions in a timely manner, which can negatively impact product quality. To address this, the factory urgently needs an intelligent management system that can collect environmental data from multiple protocols, provide alerts for out-of-spec conditions, and enable remote regulation.

Solution

WideIOT deploys an industrial IoT gateway inside the workshop’s PLC control cabinets. The gateway collects real-time data such as workshop temperature, humidity, and the operating status of temperature control devices. It converts Modbus data to MQTT and sends it to the workshop environment management system. This enables visual monitoring and management of workshop conditions, allowing for early detection of anomalies and prompt corrective actions. As a result, product quality and safety are improved, and safety management standards are enhanced.

Key Features

1. The gateway supports the Modbus protocol and can connect to multiple temperature controllers simultaneously. After protocol parsing, data is uniformly reported to the platform via MQTT, eliminating data silos.

2. Temperature, humidity, and equipment status data are pushed in real time to a local data dashboard over Ethernet, allowing managers to stay informed of workshop conditions at all times.

3. Customizable upper and lower thresholds for temperature and humidity. When data exceeds the thresholds, automatic alerts are sent via WeChat, SMS, or email to ensure a fast response to anomalies.

4. Remote Modbus read/write commands can be issued through the platform, allowing remote adjustment of temperature setpoints and device on/off control, reducing the need for manual on-site operations.

5. Data storage to a database is supported, enabling historical queries, trend comparison, and report export, providing data support for process optimization and quality management.

6. The gateway features edge caching. During a network outage, data is automatically stored locally, and once the connection is restored, the data is automatically backfilled to ensure no data loss.
