Application of PLC Smart Gateways in IoT-Based Wastewater Treatment Systems

Published: 2026-07-01 11:20:46

A wastewater treatment plant typically consists of two main systems: the sewage treatment system and the sludge treatment system. The sewage treatment process includes units such as the inlet well, coarse screen chamber, lift pump station, fine screen chamber, aerated grit tank, blower room, oxidation ditch, secondary clarifier, UV disinfection channel, and effluent channel. The sludge treatment system comprises facilities like the sludge return pump house and dewatering building. The overall objective is to separate, remove, recover, or convert pollutants in wastewater into harmless substances, thereby purifying the water.

Most modern wastewater treatment plants rely on programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to automate their operations. Signals from field instruments and sensors are fed into the PLCs, and then PLC smart gateways collect data from these controllers and transmit it via 4G networks to remote monitoring platforms and host computers. This enables comprehensive, intelligent oversight of the entire treatment process, significantly improving operational efficiency and management effectiveness.

In this setup, PLC Station 1 is responsible for data acquisition and remote monitoring of instruments at locations such as the coarse screen, lift pumps, fine screen, and aerated grit tank. PLC Station 2 handles control and monitoring of equipment including aerators, gate hoists, submersible mixers, motorized weir gates, and internal return revolving gates.

Through the remote monitoring platform and host computers, plant managers can view the on/off status of pumps, gates, screens, and other equipment, as well as process parameters such as water level, flow rate, and pressure—anytime and from anywhere. These parameters are displayed and can be controlled via intuitive SCADA-style interface screens. In the event of abnormalities or faults, automatic alerts are sent to managers via WeChat, SMS, or email, enabling rapid fault identification and timely corrective actions to ensure safe and stable treatment operations.

Moreover, the PLC smart gateway also supports remote programming, debugging, and program upload/download for geographically dispersed PLCs. This provides equipment manufacturers with reliable, real-time remote maintenance support, helping to improve service responsiveness, quickly restore faulty equipment, and ensure the continuity and smooth operation of wastewater treatment processes.
